Pun Pun Farm and Sustainability Learning Center

Chiang Mai Province, Thailand

Pun Pun Farm hosts Aqueous Solutions’ field research station and base of operations in SE Asia.

The Pun Pun (“Thousand Varieties”) Farm community in northern Thailand is located about sixty kilometers north of Chiang Mai city in the northern region of the country. Their mission is to develop, practice and share a variety of sustainable and self-reliant techniques for healthful, high-quality livelihood that can meet the basic needs of the Pun Pun community through incorporation of traditional wisdom and local resources.

The farm supplies local markets and restaurants in the nearby city of Chiang Mai with organic produce, organizes a regional network of organic farmers and seed savers among the rural villages throughout the region, and hosts a seed bank and agro-biodiversity conservation program. They also teach natural and earthen building skills to folks from all over Thailand and around the world.

Aqueous Solutions has worked with the Pun Pun community to implement a multiple-media water filtration system, treating local surface water to render it safe for drinking and kitchen use. Aqueous has also installed rainwater harvesting capacity for the farm, increased water supply and distribution to the property, and has provided trainings in various aspects of appropriate technologies in water resources for farm interns and workshop participants. Pun Pun Farm also serves as an experimental field station for Aqueous Solutions’ projects under development and in pilot testing, for example solar thermal water heating and solar disinfection for drinking water.

Because the farm is a teaching and learning center with year-round programs attended by hundreds of people from all over Thailand, SE Asia, and around the world, there is tremendous demonstration and dissemination potential for projects undertaken at this site.
